MYSORE: There is an urgent need for the establishment of a separate ministry for Men's Welfare to stop 'the constant harassment of men', decided the participants at the seminar 'Men's rights and its infringement by society’, organised by the Peoples Urge for Rights and Equity (PURE) in Mysore on Saturday.

The seminar deliberated on ways and means to save men from the misuse of laws and Acts formulated to protect women.

The notable proposals made in the seminar were: 'family disputes should be settled within six months', 'implementing the Domestic Violence Act irrespective of gender', 'provision for mother- in-laws to file harassment cases against daughter-inlaws' and 'action against those misusing the Dowry Act to harass innocent men'.

Sharadavilas Law College Principal Prof A M Bollamma, CRISP President Kumar Jahagirdhar, Prof H L Keshavamurthy, Dr B G Ponnappa were among those present at the seminar.

SEMINAR DRAWS FLAK

Meanwhile, the Samatha Vedike opposed the seminar on Saturday. A release from the Vedike stated that law of the land considers the single parent family and divorce as democratic and human rights.

It further said that the organisers view on single parent family was unacceptable.

"More than 50 per cent of families are managed by women due to alcoholism or desertion," said the release.

The vedike also questioned the Department of Sociology for collaborating with PURE to organise the seminar.
