Bengaluru: A national judicial commission and judicial reforms are needed to clear the pending cases and ensure their speedy disposal, demanded organisations Save Indian Family Foundation and Child Rights Initiative for Shared Parenting (CRISP).

“As per the High Court registry, 39,10,858 cases are pending in the High Court and 2,66,50,467 cases in the subordinate courts as on December 31,” said Kumar V. Jahgirdhar, president of CRISP, addressing a press conference of Sunday

With more than 10,000 cases pending in the city family courts, increasing their numbers to 20 from the current four courts would help. Evening courts have to set up to clear the backlog of cases. Five separate guardianship courts have to be dedicated for child custody disputes, Mr Jahgirdhar added.

He also suggested outsourcing non-core judiciary jobs to private parties to increase efficiency.

“An ombudsman for the judiciary must be appointed with powers of audit and inspection,” said Anil Kumar, president of Save Indian Family Foundation.

The members of the organisations demanded the implementation of the Mallimath Committee’s recommendations on judicial reforms that has been neglected by the authorities for the past six years.
