Chandigarh: Harassed husbands, riding high on the success of a three-day meet in Shimla, have decided to carve out a new brethren sect which will reportedly fight for rights of battered men across the country.

Bombarded with calls for assistance, members of Save India Family Foundation (SIFF) on Monday zeroed in on various parks where many like them could reach out for a balm on a weekly basis. “The idea was to start local chapters in various cities but the flood of calls and queries from battered husbands and their families made us realize that everyone couldn’t be accommodated in a room. So, now we have an open platform where anyone can come and share his plight. In return, we will assist him in his fight for justice,’’ said Nitin Gupta, SIFF Foundation, Chandigarh Chapter.

With a strategy as simple as — if you are harassed by your wife, then walk over to the nearest park and seek help — SIFF listed Borivali National Park, Mumbai, India Gate in New Delhi, Leisure Valley, Chandigarh, Laxman Park in Lucknow, Cubbon Park in Bangalore, Thiruvika in Chennai, Shambhaji in Pune and Rednam Plaza in Vishakhapatnam.

Crying hoarse over how their wives turned into tyrants, hundreds of men, representing 40,000 harassed husbands, resolved that they wanted a separate rights commission. “The country has human rights commissions for children and women but what about men? Are we not humans? Don’t we have rights? To make matters worse, people laugh at us when we say that our wives harass us,’’ said Abhishek Chauhan, a visibly harried soul.

NOW, MEN’S DAY

What started as a small wave, it is all set to turn into a big movement. SIFF members have decided that November 19 will be celebrated as Men’s Day across the country. “We want that in law books, the words husband and wife be replaced with spouse, whereas man and woman with person,’’ said a member of SIFF.
