A study on the Dowry Prohibition Act 1961 was done as a law project by a couple of graduates of the esteemed management school, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. Some excerpts of the same:
Dowry is derived from the ancient Hindu custom of "kanyadan", where the father presents his daughter jewelry and clothes at the time of her marriage, and "vardakshina", where the father of the bride presents the groom cash or kind. Both of these were done voluntarily and out of affection and love. These days, these customs have rendered coercive and brutally dangerous. What was originally intended to be a taken dakshina for the bridegroom has now gone out of proportion and has assumed the nomenclature 'dowry'.
Despite the fact that in the last few decades the Dowry Prohibition Act has been made more stringent, the culture of dowry-giving is spreading even to communities, which has no such tradition one or two generation ago. According to an article in Time magazine, deaths in India related to dowry demands have increase 15-fold since the mid-1980s from 400 a year to around 5,800 a year by the middle of the 1990s.

US Department of Justice publishes a report with data on violence by Intimate Partners.
Will Govt. of India conduct a similar scientific study (involving both genders) ? At present, the statistics are collected only for women who are assaulted by their partners. Similar violence against men remains grossly under reported. This report also debunks the myth that 95% victims of domestic violence are women.

Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF) spokesperson Swarup Sarkar has accused WCD Minister Renuka Chowdhury of fudging the statistics on "dowry deaths". According to Mr.Sarkar, Minister Renuka Chowdhury only talked about the reported dowry death cases and deliberately avoided mentioning the actual convictions in "dowry death trials" after false cases are dismissed in the courts.
Minister Renuka Chowdhury had referred to "registered dowry death cases" in Parliament.

US Elder Abuse Report
The first major study of elder abuse, The National Elder Abuse Incidence Study by The National Center on Elder Abuse in US documents that 53 percent of the abusers were male and 47 percent female. Children, adolescents, people with special needs, and the elderly, regardless of gender, often do not have the physical or economic power to defend themselves against physical assaults and emotional neglect. Indisputable data documents this behavior is exhibited, by the strong against the weak, regardless of gender.
